Tam May grew up in the United States. She earned her B.A. and M.A in English and worked as an English college instructor and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher before she became a full-time writer. She started writing when she was fourteen and writing became her voice. She writes historical literary fiction (and some contemporary fiction), specifically psychological fiction, creating stories about characters from the inside out. Her first book, a collection of contemporary short stories titled Gnarled Bones And Other Stories was published in 2017 and nominated for a Summer Indie Book Award.
She is currently working on a historical family drama series titled The Waxwood Series. Set in Northern California in the 1890’s, the series explores crumbling family relationships in the midst of revolutionary changes and shifting values in America’s Gilded Age. The central focus of the series is the Alderdices, an aristocratic and socially prominent San Francisco family. The first book of the series, The Specter will be out in June 2019.
Tam’s love of puzzles includes both characters and plot so she also writes historical mystery fiction. She is currently working on a series entitled The Paper Chase Mysteries. The series, set in Northern California at the turn of the 20th century, features amateur sleuth and stationary shop owner Adele Gossling, a product and rebel of her time — young, progressive, and independent, one of the century’s modern New Women.
Tam lives in Texas but calls San Francisco and the Bay Area, where much of her fiction is set, home. When she’s not writing, she’s reading classic literature and watching classic films.
